What to look out for when applying for a grant

August 29th, 2013

Whoever said that getting a grant is easy probably never applied for one. And nowadays with the Internet it became harder and easier at the same time. Easier because you can really get access to information faster and harder because you can get contradictory information about the same grant. So before you apply for any type of grant you have to check, double check and look for some of the common pitfalls and traps.

Firstly check the processing fee for any grant or scholarship you might want to get. The fee you pay for processing you will not get back, so many grants will deceive you with high fees. Ask about them before you start paying. Also watch out for money back guarantees if you don`t get the grant funding. No serious institution will offer one so beware.

Once you start applying for grants you will receive communications from different institution. Check that you get communication from the right and checked ones. Sometimes fake ones will get your contact data and pose for serious institutions in order to convince you to buy something from them or to pay an inexistent fee.

Understand that nobody else can apply for a grant instead of you, at least not completely. You need to add personalized info like essays or manuscripts so a company that promises it will do everything for you might be lying. Also do not give you bank info or credit card info unless you are sure who is going to charge it and what you will get in return.

Remember that most information about grants is usually free and available even if you need to search for it a little bit. While some companies will offer insights and news or even info in a compressed form that will help you save time, watch out for seminar or institution that promise false data. Check the source of every information you get and if possible verify the website that is offering it.

Taking care does not mean being paranoid and thinking that everyone wants to take your money. There are thousands of institutions and companies that mean well and want to offer good info to help you in this complicated world of grant funding. So be careful, but go ahead and apply for the grants that can pay for your studies.

Now I would like to pursue the Professional Course “Chartered Accountancy (ICAI, India)”. There are 3 (three) stages in Professional Chartered Accountancy Course of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI, India) – (1) CPT, (2) IPCC and (3) CA Final. Since, I have passed M.Com. (F&C), i.e., Master of Commerce in Finance & Control by scoring above 60% marks, I will get exemption from the First Stage, i.e, CPT and I need to complete just Two Stages – (1) IPCC and (2) CA Final, for completing the Professional Chartered Accountancy Course.

It is estimated that to meet the expenditure of (1) Registration/s Fees and Examinations Fees, (2) Oral or Face to Face Mode Coaching Fees, (3) Purchase of Books, (4) Payment of Subscriptions to Journals, (5) Hostel Charges, and
    (6) Travelling, etc., I need a Grant or Donation to the extent of UK £ 10,000 or US $ 15,000 in piece-meal or in installments.

However, hailing from a financially backward family and due to financial crisis of my family, I am not in a position to afford payment of fees for any of the Professional Course, like “CA (ICAI, India)”. Thus, I am compelled to stretch my hand for external support from the Philanthropists or Charity Organizations. In fact, I had to struggle like anything for reaching out or achieving my present educational status.

Please, therefore, accord sanction of financial grant or donation as sought for or atleast guide me as to how I should proceed to obtain the necessary financial grant immediately, and oblige.

    Thanks & Regards,

    SYEDA KHADERBI, M.A.(Hindi), M.Com.(Finance & Control),
    INDIA.

    PS:

Please permit me to submit my deepest desire & strong opinion that, per suppose, if your organization is pleased to appoint me as your Organization’s Resident Field Representative in India, on a monthly salary basis plus allowable or applicable allowances such as travelling, etc., I will not only be very glad to serve your esteemed organization, but also there will not be any need for me to stretch my hand for financial help by way of Charity or Donation.

The Job-Responsibility (of your Organization’s Resident Field Representative) being initially to look after the field tasks of your Organization in connection with your prospective clients/grantees – NGOs/SHGs in India, such as –

o As per the instructions of the Principals, to undertake evaluation & review of Project or Programme Implementation by Grantees, and wherever necessary extend assistance to the Grantees in reprogramming their Methodology for a better outcome of their performance.

o As per the instructions of the Principals, extending collaborative guidelines, undertaking assessment of impact of the project implemented by the Grantees and submitting the factual & authentic reports as required by the Principals.

and, to initiate tasks pertaining to create, establish & maintain your branch office or franchise in India, and, even to Manage data flow processes and assure timely monthly reporting.

In fact, working with your Organization, or working for & on behalf of your Organization will definitely not only facilitate me financially to pursue the Professional Chartered Accountancy Course, but also be helpful to enhance my practical skills, preferably communicative skills in English with desired written & spoken command over International Standard of English.

If given an opportunity, I assure your benevolence that I will work upto the utmost satisfaction of the Organization. Further, after successfully completing the Professional Chartered Accountancy Course, I may be willing to head the Indian Office of your organization, and oblige.
